Amarnath Cave Temple
Amarnath Cave Temple is located in the winter capital, Jammu and Kashmir, India. The Amarnath cave is located at an altitude of 12,756 feet, and reported to be 5000 years old. The temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva. And the sacred Amarnath temple is considered to be one of the ever holiest temple of Hinduism.
The sacred cave was believed to be discovered by Buta Malik, a shepherd. The mythology says that a Saint gave a bag full of coal to Buta Malik and when he opened the bag after reaching home, he found that the bag is filled with of gold coins. And this magic freezed Buta Malik in an utter surprise. When he went searching the saint to thank him, the saint got disappeared. On searching the saint, he found the holy cave and the Shiva Lingam. Since then the cave has become a sacred place for the Pilgrimage. The sacred Shiva lingam inside the cave is formed amazingly when the water falls from the roof gets assembled and it starts to freeze on the floor and grows up from the floor.The stalagmite formed is considered to be the sacred Shiva Lingam, worshipped by the devotees.

The presiding deity of Amarnath Cave Temple is Lord Shiva, who is in the unique form of Ice Lingam. And this is the holy place where Lord Shiva explained the secret of immortality to Goddess Parvati. To narrate the secret of immortality, Lord Shiva left all His belongings away, even His five elements (Earth, Fire, Water, Air and Sky) to be more cautious. To teach the secret of immortality, Lord searched for a secret place, and finally found the cave, which is now the great Amarnath cave. Lord Shiva took His place on the deer skin. Wisely, Lord created a Rudra named Kalagni and instructed to set fire around the cave to destroy every living thing around the cave and Lord started narrate the secret of eternity to Goddess Parvati, but unknowingly, an egg remained protected under the deer skin on which Lord Shiva took His seat. The secret of immortality was heard by the egg and later, a pair of pigeons born out of the egg and became immortal. It is reported that still the pilgrims can see the pigeon pair on the way towards the temple.
The unique feature of Amarnath temple is that the sacred Shiva Lingam increases and decreases in its size, indicating the different phases of moon.There are two other ice formations exist within the cave, which are believed to be Goddess Parvati and Lord Ganesha.
The temple will be opened for worship from mid-June or at the beginning of July till August.

Pilgirimages can reach Amarnath temple by trekking. Jammu and Srinagar are well connected with major nearby destinations.
Buses connect Srinagar to places such as Chandigarh, Jammu, Pahalgam, Delhi, and Leh. Taxis to the destination is also available.
