Kodi Kuzhagar Temple

Kodi Kuzhagar Temple is located at the town of Kodikkarai, Nagapatnam district of Tamilnadu.

Kodi Kuzhagar Temple is also called by the names Kuzhagar Temple and Amrithakadeswarar Temple.

Kodi Kuzhagar temple is glorified in epic Tevaram and revered as one of the Paadal Petra Sthalam, temples that are revered in the verses of Saiva Nayanars in the 6th-9th century CE and are amongst the greatest Shiva temples of the continent.

Kodi Kuzhagar Temple

The temple is believed to be built by the Chola Kings and has inscriptions which dates back to the period of Aditya Chola (871–907 CE), Rajaraja Chola I (985–1014 CE), Rajendra Chola I (1012–1044 CE) and Kulothunga Chola I (1070–1120 CE), who have contributed a lot to the temple.

Among the 63 Nayanmars, Saiva saints of 6th to 8th century AD, Sundarar and Tirugnanasambandar are closely related to this temple.

The presiding deity of this temple is Lord Kuzhagar (Lord Shiva) also called as Amrithakadeswarar, in the form of a sacred lingam, made of granite. And the goddess of the temple is called as Anjanakshi Thayaar

The temple is built in a Dravidian style of architecture, which contains five-tiered Rajagopuram (gateway tower) and three Prakarams (precincts).

The other deities of the temple are Lord Ganesha, Lord Murugan, Nandi, the bull mount of Lord Shiva, Navagrahas (nine celestial bodies), Lord Dakshinamurthy, Goddess Durga, and Lord Chandikeswarar etc.

Among the 63 Nayanmars, Saiva saints of 6th to 8th century AD, Sundarar and Tirugnanasambandar are closely related to this temple.

The Theertham (sacred temple tank) of Kodi Kuzhagar temple are Agni theertham, Amudha Kinaru theertham. And the temple tree is called Kura tree.
