Thousand Pillar Temple

Thousand Pillar temple is located at the place called Hanamakonda, Warangal district of Telangana.
Thousand Pillar temple was built by the Kakatiya ruler Rudra Deva as a dedication of great honor to Lord Shiva, Lord Vishnu, and Lord Surya (the Sun God) during the period of Kakatiya dynasty (period between 1175–1324 CE). But the temple was destroyed by the Tughlaq dynasty, which was a Muslim dynasty of Turkic origin which ruled over the Delhi sultanate in medieval India. And in the year 2004, the temple was again renovated by the Government of India.

The Thousand Pillar temple houses three separate shrines of Lord Shiva, Lord Vishnu and Lord Surya, the Sun god.

The temple is constructed in a star shaped structure. And there are numerous shrines are built inside the temple premises. There are also several Shivalingams housed inside the temple, surrounded by a big garden.

Thousand Pillar temple is considered as the triumph of outstanding architectural excellence of Kakatiya vishwakarma sthapathis.  And the specialty is that the thousand pillars never get in the way of the devotees in any point as an obstacle to worship the god. And the temple locates a beautiful idol of Nandi (bull), the mount of Lord Shiva, which was in the form of a polished black basalt (extrusive igneous) monolith (standing stone). The temple also houses the deities of rock cut elephants and perforated screens, which are appraised as the main attribute of Kakatiya dynasty, who built the temple.


The temple remains open from morning 06.00 AM to 08.00 PM in the evening.

Thousand Pillar Temple lies near the Hanamkonda-Warangal Highway in Telangana State, about 150 kms from the city of Hyderabad. Regular buses ply on the roads from Hyderabad, Vijayawada, Karimnagar, Khammam and other districts of Andhra Pradesh.
